Fire departments receive grants LESLIE BEACHBOARD Managing Editor WINDSOR - Ten volunteer fire departments across Bertie County received grants. North Carolina Insurance Commissioner Mike Cau sey distributed $5,000 grant checks to 10 local volunteer fire departments. Askewville, Aulander, Blue Jay, Coierain, Kelford, Lewiston Woodville, Mer- lyhill-Midway, Perrytown, Powellsville and Roxobel Volimteer Fire Departments received its checte during a presentation at the Windsor Fire Department TXiesday morning. Causey distributed grants checks totaling $145,000 to 29 volunteer fire depart ments when he travell^ to Halifax, Northampton, Hert ford and Gates counties on Monday, Feb. 7 and Bertie, Washington and Hyde coun ties on Thesday, Feb. 8. The grants are a result of a $500,000 contribution made by Blue Cross Blue Shield of North Carolina to help firefighters in North Carolina Half of the contribution will be distributed in $5,0{X) grants to the 50 North Car olina volunteer fire depart ments that received the least amount of funding from local governments. The remaining $250,000 will go toward mental health education and treat ment programs for North Carolina firefighters. Five more Bertie Co. lives lost LESLIE BEACHBOARD Managing Editor WINDSOR - COVID-19 claimed the lives of five more Bertie County resi dents last week, eventhough the current COVID-19 active case count is below 40. The Albemarle Regional Health Services provided its most recent update at 1 p.m. Friday, Feb. 4. The new updated report only provides information on COVID-19 facility out breaks, regional deaths and ARHS vaccination informa tion. The number of current and recovered cases and number of vaccinations administered is no longer being reported for each county in the health district This change is due to inac curacies with the totals due to COVID-19 home testing and vaccinations being ad ministered through various outlets. The Albemarle Regional Albemarle Health Services reported five new COVID-19 related deaths in the dis trict AH five deaths were in Bertie County. All five individuals were in the 65 years and older age range. These deaths are not associated with a facility outbreak. There are four COVID-19 outbreaks in congregate liv ing facilities in Bertie Coun ty- Bertie Correctional In stitute has reported 100 in mates and 70 staff members have tested positive. Brian Center of Windsor has reported at eight resi dents and 14 staff members have tested positive. Three Rivers has reported three residents and 12 staff mem-, bers have tested positive. ] Wmdsor House has re-^ ported three residents and four staff members have tested positive. ‘ The Albemarle Regional Health Services continues' to offer appointments for Pfizer vaccinations for age^ five and older, as well asr Modema and Johnson & Johnson for adults age 18 and up. Appointments are for first, second, third and booster doses. Anyone that had received previous COVID-19 vaccines are asked to bring their vaccine cards to the appointment Parental consent is re quired for children 17 years old and younger. In addition, COVID-19 testing is still available by appointment at the loc^ health department across the region. On Dec. 16,2021, the Ber tie Correctional Institution Men’s Service Club donated $500 to the local nonprofit Backpack Program of Ber tie County. When Bertie Correction al Institution Men’s Service Club was created it was designed to create and pro vide positive incentives, and a way to help each other as well as the community. The program promotes positive behavior and gives the offenders a constant awareness of civic duties and standards in an effort to improve their life while incarcerated. The Bertie County Back pack Program is a nonprofit that feeds the youth of the community.
